Here is a letter from Imam Daayiee Abdullah, our Executive Director:
Dear Friends, Salaam,
Thank you for all the support you have given me over the years. I would not be where I am without your support, and for that I’m deeply grateful.
As you may know, I’m the Executive Director of MECCA Institute. MECCA Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to expand progressive Islamic theology through education and research. Since 2015, we secured several scholars around the world to come on board as leaders. By focusing our scholarly work on women, LGBT, and the youth, we are creating an alternative Islamic perspective. This perspective, which I call the Progressive Islamic perspective, is one that supports inclusive Muslims in communities that have been inundated with extremism and discontent.
We found a funder for the first step, the chaplaincy program. The chaplaincy program, takes students through a 2-year progressive Islamic education, producing qualified progressive spiritual leaders.
Funding received was not enough to cover all of the expenses the program incurred. Our End-of-Year donation drive will fund scholarships for deserving progressives to become chaplains for our community. Our imams will welcome opportunities to serve progressive communities in community and prayer centers for all types of Muslims. I am asking you to support our $100,000 goal.
Would you make a year-end donation of $50, $100 or whatever you feel you can give and help us meet our goal and give students an opportunity to learn in a progressive Islamic school?
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your support.
May Allah continue to bless us all.
